Our verdict

Ranked first: the strongest checkout and payments stack, if you watch the extras

On the evidence, Shopify has the strongest checkout and payments stack, built-in POS, B2B tools on every plan and the largest app ecosystem, from $29 a month on an annual plan. That puts it first. Cost control is the weak spot. The 2% fee for outside gateways on Basic pushes you into Shopify Payments, and many features live in paid apps. Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress and want full ownership, BigCommerce if you sell heavily on Amazon and eBay, and Square Online if your store mainly backs up a physical shop.

Good fit for

  • New and growing product brands that want one platform for web, social and in-person sales
  • Stores expecting to scale past $100,000 a year without a re-platform
  • Sellers who want to add wholesale (B2B) ordering later
  • Merchants who prefer hosted software over running WordPress

Look elsewhere if you are

  • WordPress site owners who want a store inside their existing site: choose WooCommerce
  • Shops that mostly sell in person and want a free online add-on: choose Square Online
  • Creators selling only digital files: Sellfy or Big Cartel cost less

Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform from Shopify Inc., a Canadian company founded in 2006. One admin runs your online store, checkout, payments, point of sale and sales channels. You never install software or manage a server. Most merchants pay two bills: the subscription and card processing through Shopify Payments.

On the Cybernock research rubric Shopify scores 8.9/10 and ranks first in our best e-commerce platforms list. It leads on payments, channels and growth headroom. It loses points on total cost. The cheapest way to run Shopify depends on using its own payment processor and keeping your app bill small.

How does Shopify work?

You pick a plan, choose a theme, add products and connect a payment method. It hosts the site and handles PCI compliance for card payments. The admin covers orders, inventory, discounts and customers. Extra features come from its app store, the largest in hosted commerce.

The same catalog feeds the online store, the Shopify POS app for in-person sales, social channels and marketplaces. Inventory updates across all of them. That matters the day you start selling in a second place, say a weekend market alongside the website.

What does Shopify really cost at $5,000 a month in sales?

About $204 a month on Basic, if you use Shopify Payments. The figure assumes 100 orders of $50, all paid online with US cards, plus the yearly-billed plan price. The plan is the small part. Processing is most of the bill.

Cost itemBasicGrowBasic with an outside gateway
Plan (billed yearly)$29$79$29
Card processing2.9% + 30¢ = $1752.7% + 30¢ = $165Gateway’s fee, e.g. 2.9% + 30¢ = $175
Shopify transaction fee$0$02% = $100
Monthly total$204$244$304

Two lessons follow. First, Grow pays for itself on card fees only once monthly sales pass about $25,000: it saves 0.2 percentage points but costs $50 more. Skip the Grow upgrade until you need staff accounts or its reports; the rate alone won’t justify it. Second, don’t use an outside gateway on Basic. The 2% fee adds $100 a month at this volume, which is more than three times the plan price.

The rates above come from Shopify’s US pricing as reported by Website Builder Expert and other October 2026 guides, because Shopify’s pricing page showed regional prices during our research. Check them at checkout.

Apps are the hidden line. Product reviews, subscriptions, advanced bundles and wholesale price rules often come from third-party apps billed monthly. When you stop using an app, uninstall it, because a paid app bills every month while it stays installed. Set a monthly app budget before you launch, and audit installed apps every quarter.

Which Shopify features matter most for a growing store?

  • Checkout and Shop Pay: a one-tap checkout for returning shoppers, with third-party payment providers available if you need them.
  • Point of sale: POS Lite is included with every plan. POS Pro adds staff permissions and multi-location tools for $89 a month per location. Don’t bother with Pro for a single market stall.
  • Large catalogs: up to 2,048 variants per product across three options, according to Shopify’s changelog. Some older themes and apps still expect 100.
  • B2B on every plan: since 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced can use company accounts and up to three active B2B catalogs; deposits and partial payments stay on Plus (Shopify Help Center).
  • International selling: Shopify Markets sets local currencies, prices and domains per country from one store.
  • Inventory locations: 10 on Basic to Advanced, and up to 200 on Plus.

In practice, B2B on Basic is the change worth noticing. A small brand can now take wholesale orders from a few shops without paying for Plus.

Where does Shopify fall short?

The sticker price isn’t what you pay. Card processing, the outside-gateway fee and apps all sit on top, so when you budget, treat the $29 as the floor. Staff accounts are another pinch point. Basic has no additional staff seats, so a two-person team that wants separate logins has to move to Grow.

Customisation has limits too. Themes use Shopify’s Liquid template language, and some checkout changes are reserved for Plus. The free trial lasts just three days, though the $1-a-month offer for three months softens that.

Tiny sellers have lost their cheap way in. The $5 Starter plan for link-in-bio selling no longer appears on Shopify’s pricing page, and Style Factory reports it is closed to new merchants.

How does Shopify compare with WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Wix?

WooCommerce costs less in software and gives you full control, but you run hosting, updates and security. BigCommerce includes Amazon, eBay and Walmart connections on every plan. Its new sales caps, though, mean a $5,000-a-month store already needs the $79 Growth plan. Wix matches Shopify’s entry price with no outside-gateway fee and an easier designer, but its commerce ecosystem is much smaller.

Who should not use Shopify?

Shopify is the wrong pick in four situations.

  • You’ve built your site on WordPress. If you’ve already invested there, WooCommerce adds a shop inside it, and you keep one platform instead of two.
  • Most of your sales happen at a counter. Square Online gives you a free web store tied to Square POS.
  • You only sell digital files. Sellfy or Big Cartel cost less, and Shopify’s strengths in shipping, inventory and POS go unused.
  • You’re set on an outside payment processor and plan to stay on Basic. The 2% fee will cost more than the plan itself; Wix and WooCommerce charge no such fee.

Should you choose Shopify?

Yes, if you sell physical products and plan to grow. Start on Basic with annual billing, and use Shopify Payments to dodge the 2% fee. Add POS Lite if you sell at markets. Move to Grow only when you need staff accounts. With a path that runs from Basic to Plus, you’re unlikely to outgrow it.

The answer changes in three cases. If you already run a WordPress site, WooCommerce adds a store without a second platform. If most of your sales happen at a counter, Square Online gives you a free web store tied to Square POS. If you only sell downloads, Sellfy is simpler. Shopify FAQ

How much does Shopify cost per month?

Basic costs $29 a month on annual terms or $39 month to month in the US. Grow is $79 or $105, and Advanced is $299 or $399. On top of that you pay card processing, 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale on Basic with Shopify Payments, plus any paid apps.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?

Not if you use Shopify Payments. If you use an outside payment gateway, Shopify adds 2% per order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of that gateway's own processing fee.

Is Shopify worth it for a small store?

Usually, yes. At $5,000 a month in sales, Basic costs about $204 a month including card fees, close to Wix and BigCommerce, with stronger checkout, POS and app options. If you sell only a handful of products, Big Cartel can cost less.

Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is better?

Shopify is better if you want hosted software with payments, POS and support in one bill. WooCommerce is better if you already run WordPress and want to own your code and data, accepting that you manage hosting, updates and security yourself.

Does Shopify have a free plan?

No. Shopify offers a 3-day free trial followed by $1 a month for the first three months on eligible plans. The $5 Starter plan for social selling no longer appears on Shopify's pricing page.
