Graphic designCanvaThe largest template library (3.6M+ claimed on Pro), Canva Print, CMYK PDF export and unmetered everyday AI on paid plans; Pro is $144 a year for one person.
Video editingDaVinci ResolveA free professional editor with no watermark, UHD export and industry-standard color, plus a one-time $295 Studio upgrade; the learning curve is the price you pay.
What does design and video software cover?
Four jobs. Graphic design apps make social posts, flyers, slides and print files from templates or from scratch, and video editors cut footage into finished films, tutorials and short clips. Photo editors develop RAW files and retouch images. Stock media sites license what you can’t make yourself.
Our scores look past the sticker price. We weigh what the plan you need costs over time, free-version limits, AI credit caps and the licence terms behind what you publish.
Which Design & Video tool do you need first?
A graphic design tool, for most businesses. Posts come before video. Canva‘s free plan is enough to begin. Then pick by what you publish.
- If you publish video on YouTube, in courses or on social: add a video editor. DaVinci Resolve is free with no watermark; Clipchamp is the simpler free choice on Windows and in a browser.
- If you shoot RAW photos: add a photo editor. darktable costs nothing, while Lightroom adds the best photo library and mobile apps for $11.99 a month on the annual plan, and Adobe charges a fee if you cancel that plan after 14 days.
- If you need footage, photos or templates you can’t make: add a stock subscription. Envato covers all three from $16.50 a month on annual billing; Storyblocks is the footage specialist.
- If you would rather not subscribe: buy once. DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295, Final Cut Pro $299.99 and DxO PhotoLab $249.99, and Affinity is free.
What are the top picks in each category?
| Category | Top pick | Price from | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphic design | Canva (8.9) | Free; Pro $144/yr | Non-designers who make their own social posts, flyers and menus |
| Video editing | DaVinci Resolve (8.6) | Free; Studio $295 one-time | YouTubers and filmmakers who want pro tools without a subscription |
| Photo editing | Adobe Lightroom (8.8) | Free mobile app; $11.99/mo (annual plan, billed monthly) | Photographers who shoot RAW and edit on several devices |
| Stock media | Envato (8.5) | Core $16.50/mo billed annually | YouTubers, editors and designers who need footage, fonts and templates in one plan |
Canva has the largest template library here, more than 3.6 million on Pro by Canva’s count, plus Canva Print and CMYK PDF export, and Pro costs $144 a year for one person. DaVinci Resolve exports up to UHD with no watermark in its free version. Expect a steep learning curve. Lightroom bundles Lightroom Classic, 1TB of storage and AI Denoise for $11.99 a month, and Envato’s Core plan works out at about 33 cents a download at 50 a month.
When does the order change?
When a small team shares the work, Adobe Express Teams costs $4.99 per licence a month in the first year, then $7.99, against $250 a year per person on Canva Business. If you’ve got only Macs, Final Cut Pro gives you more speed, and podcasters do better with Descript, which edits video through its transcript. For retouching, buy Photoshop in Adobe’s $19.99 Photography plan. Skip the single-app plan. In stock, Storyblocks suits video-first work and Shutterstock fits campaigns that need up to $250,000 of indemnity.
What should you not pay for yet?
Skip the subscriptions until a free tool stops you. The free tier is deep. Canva and Affinity are free for design, Resolve and Clipchamp for video, darktable for RAW photos. Don’t bother with Resolve Studio until you need 10-bit footage, frame rates above 60fps or the AI Neural Engine, because the free version already exports UHD with no watermark.
Most people miss the licence side. Stock licences differ more than prices do. Envato registers each download to one project and states no indemnity on individual plans, while Shutterstock and iStock offer up to $250,000 on their top licences, which is the figure a cautious client will ask about. Exit terms bite too: Shutterstock agreed to pay $35 million to settle FTC allegations over its cancellation fees in May 2026. When you sign an annual plan, read the early-exit line first. In practice, start monthly.
Questions people ask
Which creative tool should I get first?
A graphic design tool, for most businesses and creators, because social posts, flyers and slides come before video. Canva is our top pick, and its free plan has more than 1.6 million templates by Canva's count. Add a video editor if you publish video, a photo editor if you shoot RAW, and stock media when you need assets you can't create.
Can I design and edit video and photos for free?
Yes, with limits. Canva and Affinity cost nothing for design. Affinity even imports PSD, AI and InDesign files. DaVinci Resolve exports UHD video with no watermark, and Clipchamp exports 1080p in a browser or on Windows. darktable is a free RAW editor, and Photopea runs layered edits in any browser, with ads.
Which creative tools can I buy once instead of subscribing?
DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295 once and Final Cut Pro $299.99 on the Mac App Store. For photos, DxO PhotoLab 10 Elite costs $249.99, ON1 Photo RAW $99.99 in its October 2026 offer and Luminar $99 for desktop. Adobe's apps, Canva Pro and Descript are subscriptions, and Affinity is free.
What should I check before buying a stock media plan?
Three things: the price per asset at your real volume, the licence, and the exit terms. Envato licenses each download to one project, while Shutterstock and iStock offer up to $250,000 indemnity on top licences. Shutterstock charges 50% of the remaining annual fee to leave early and Adobe Stock up to half after 14 days, so start monthly.
How does Cybernock score design and video software?
Each tool gets a research score out of 10 from criteria weighted for its category, such as templates and ease of use for design, editing power for video, image quality for photos and licence cover for stock. We apply them to official pricing, plan limits, licence terms, release notes and dated independent sources. Affiliate commissions never change a score.
