Canva is a template-first design platform for social posts, presentations, print and video. It is the strongest fit for non-designers, creators and small businesses that want finished designs fast, with a free plan and Pro at $144 a year for one person as listed in October 2026.

Our verdict

The best design tool for non-designers, and our top pick overall

Canva gives non-designers the largest template library, print and video tools and unmetered everyday AI in one editor that takes minutes to learn, and that is why it ranks first. Pro at $144 a year is fair value for one person. Teams pay $250 per person a year, so Adobe Express Teams is cheaper for small groups, and Figma suits companies where designers control the brand. Choose Affinity, which Canva owns, for free professional print and illustration work.

Good fit for

  • Small-business owners who make their own social posts, flyers and menus
  • Creators and freelancers who need many formats from one design
  • Teachers, nonprofits and students
  • Marketing teams without a full-time designer

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Professional illustrators and print designers: choose Affinity
  • Product and UI teams: choose Figma
  • Teams that want the lowest per-seat price: choose Adobe Express Teams or VistaCreate

Canva is an online design platform from a Sydney-based company of the same name, used for making social posts, presentations, documents, videos, print materials and simple websites from templates. It runs in the browser and in apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Company figures reported by CMSWire put it at more than 260 million monthly users at the end of 2025.

On the Cybernock research rubric Canva scores 8.9/10, first in our best graphic design software list. The evidence is lopsided: no rival gives a non-designer as many starting points for as little effort, and the paid tiers add the brand and print tools a small business needs. Two things hold it back. Prices keep moving, and the free plan’s AI allowance shrank in 2026.

What can you make with Canva?

Almost anything a small business, teacher or creator needs to publish. The editor starts from templates. When you pick a layout, you swap in your own text, photos and colours, then export or share. The company says Pro unlocks 3.6 million+ templates and 141 million+ photos, videos, graphics and audio; the free plan includes 1.6 million+ templates and 4.7 million+ assets with 5 GB of storage. Treat those as vendor counts. Plenty of any template library is variations on one idea, yet the breadth is real.

  • Social and marketing: posts and stories sized for each network, with Magic Resize on paid plans to turn one design into many formats.
  • Documents and presentations: Canva Docs, presentations with presenter view, and Canva Sheets for data.
  • Print: business cards, flyers, posters, menus and more, ordered through Canva Print.
  • Video: a timeline editor for short social clips.
  • Web: one-page websites and, with Canva Code, small interactive pages generated from a prompt.

How good are Canva’s AI tools, and what are the limits?

The AI toolset is broad and, on paid plans, generous for everyday work. Features fall into Standard, Premium and Ultra tiers. Paid plans get Standard tools under fair use with no fixed cap. Pro adds up to 200 Premium uses or 20 Ultra uses a month, and Business gives each member 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses, not pooled across the team, according to the official AI access help page.

The free plan got tighter in September 2026. Price tracker PricingSaaS recorded the change from 200 Standard or 20 Premium uses to a single pool of up to 20 Standard or Premium uses. Twenty uses lets you try the tools. Don’t plan a content calendar around them.

In April 2026 the company announced Canva AI 2.0, a conversational assistant built on its own Canva Design Model that produces layered, editable designs instead of flat images, alongside Canva Code 2.0 and AI in Canva Sheets. It’s labelled a research preview. Don’t buy a plan for it; treat it as an extra.

How much does Canva cost?

Canva Pro costs $144 a year for one person, and Canva Business costs $250 a year per person, as listed in October 2026. The official pages block our fetcher, so these figures come from PricingSaaS’s record of Canva’s US pricing page (last seen 14 September 2026), confirmed by CG Channel the next day. Third-party guides list Pro at $18 billed monthly.

Two warnings most people miss. First, list prices move. PricingSaaS logged Pro at $144 a year in April 2026, $180 from early August, and back to $144 in mid-September. Business rose from $200 to $250 a year in April. In 2024, TechCrunch reported that some US Teams customers saw a plan for up to five people jump from $119.99 to $500 a year. Second, Pro covers one person. When you add colleagues, a team of five pays for five Business seats, and the older Teams plan is closed to new sign-ups.

Which plan fits? If you work alone, pick Pro on yearly billing. Move to Business only when two or more people need shared brand controls and the larger AI allowance, and check whether Adobe Express Teams at $7.99 per licence a month would cover you for less.

Can you use Canva designs commercially?

Yes, with limits. The licence lets you use free and Pro content in commercial work, including products you sell such as printed posters, t-shirts and e-books. You can’t resell the stock library on its own, and templates that contain Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links. The catch is trademarks. The trademark help page says a logo built from Canva templates or stock elements can’t be registered, because the licence is not exclusive. If you plan to trademark a logo, don’t use template elements: build it from basic shapes, fonts and your own uploads.

In practice, print jobs are well covered: paid plans export PDF Print with a CMYK colour profile, SVG and transparent PNG files, which covers most printer requirements. Free users can still order through Canva Print, which offers free standard delivery on its product pages.

Where does Canva fall short?

  • Prices changed several times in 2026, and seat pricing makes teams expensive compared with Adobe Express Teams.
  • The free plan’s AI pool is now 20 uses, and its Brand Kit is limited to three colours.
  • Logos made from Canva elements can’t be trademarked.
  • Professional print and illustration work still needs a dedicated tool such as Affinity, which Canva itself owns.
  • Canva AI 2.0 is a research preview, so its agent features may change.

Who should not buy Canva?

Skip the paid plans if you’re a professional illustrator or print designer. Affinity, which Canva owns, is free for individuals and gives you real vector and layout control. Product and UI teams belong in Figma, where designers lock the brand and marketers fill in templates. Small teams counting every dollar should price Adobe Express Teams or VistaCreate first, because five Canva Business seats cost $1,250 a year. And if you’ve only ever needed a few social posts a month, the free plan is enough.

Adobe Express is the closest rival: fewer templates but a cheaper monthly plan, cheaper team seats and 30,000+ Adobe Fonts. Figma is the stronger tool when designers build brand templates for marketers to fill in through Figma Buzz. VistaCreate is the cheapest way to put up to 10 people on one paid plan.

Should you buy Canva?

For most non-designers, yes. The evidence: it combines the largest template library with print, video, documents and AI in one editor that takes minutes to learn. Start free. Buy Pro on yearly billing only once you need Brand Kits, Magic Resize or transparent exports.

The verdict flips in four cases. Choose Adobe Express if you want month-to-month billing or cheaper team seats. Choose Figma if a design team sets the brand. Choose Affinity for free professional illustration and print layout, and when you build data-heavy reports and infographics, Visme. Canva FAQ

Is Canva free?

Yes. Canva Free has no time limit and includes 1.6 million+ templates, 4.7 million+ assets and 5 GB of storage, by Canva's count. Since September 2026 it allows up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools, and its Brand Kit is limited to three colours.

How much is Canva Pro?

Canva Pro cost $144 a year for one person in October 2026, about $12 a month, after a short-lived rise to $180 in August. Third-party guides list $18 on monthly billing, so skip the monthly plan if you'll use it all year. Teams of two or more need Canva Business at $250 a year per person.

Can I sell designs I make in Canva?

Yes. Canva's licence allows free and Pro content in products you sell, such as printed posters and e-books. You can't resell Canva's stock content on its own, templates with Pro content can only be sold as Canva links, and logos built from Canva elements can't be trademarked.

Canva vs Adobe Express: which is better?

Canva is better for non-designers who want the most templates and built-in printing. Adobe Express is better value when you want month-to-month billing at $9.99 or team seats at $7.99 per licence a month, and if you already use Adobe apps.

Does Canva own Affinity?

Yes. Canva bought Serif, the maker of Affinity, in March 2024. In October 2025 Affinity relaunched as a single app that is free for individuals on Mac and Windows; its Canva AI tools need a paid Canva plan.
