Antivirus software is a program that detects and blocks malware, ransomware and scam sites on your devices. These antivirus reviews compare seven suites on independent lab results, system impact, privacy record and the price you pay after the first year.

Do you still need antivirus in 2026?

On a Windows PC, you already have one. Microsoft Defender ships with Windows 10 and 11 and scored 6/6 for protection in AV-Test’s August 2026 round. Anything you buy has to beat that baseline at something specific.

Defender also stopped 99.0% of attacks, with zero false alarms, in AV-Comparatives’ Real-World test. So if you’ve got a single PC and want nothing extra, skip the paid suite. Spend money when you want a lighter footprint, cover for Macs and Android phones, or bundled tools like a VPN, backup or parental controls.

Which antivirus fits you?

Lab results separate these seven less than cost and extras do. Every one earned TOP PRODUCT in that August round.

  • Most protection per dollar? Bitdefender. It blocked 99.5% in AV-Comparatives’ February to May 2026 Real-World test, the highest rate among suites sold in the US, and its 30-day trial needs no card.
  • Old, sluggish laptop? McAfee or ESET. Their AV-Comparatives impact scores of 3.3 and 4.2 in April 2026 were the lightest and third-lightest of 20.
  • One bill for VPN, backup and parental controls? Norton 360 Deluxe: an uncapped VPN plus 50 GB of cloud storage across 5 devices.
  • Dozens of gadgets? McAfee+ Premium covers unlimited devices.
  • Second-opinion scanner? Malwarebytes Free cleans up on demand. It won’t guard in real time.

Which antivirus traps should you watch for?

Three catch buyers again and again. Most people miss the first until their card is charged.

SuiteYear oneRenewalDevices
Bitdefender Total Security$59.99$109.99 (per Gizmodo)5
Norton 360 Deluxe$49.99$124.995
McAfee+ Premium Individual$49.99$149.99Unlimited
TotalAV Plus$29$994
ESET HOME Security Essential$69.99Not published5
  • Renewals that triple. McAfee+ Premium goes from $49.99 to $149.99. TotalAV climbs from $29 to $99.
  • Early charges. McAfee bills about 30 days before your term ends. Bitdefender, by contrast, refunds within 30 days of an automatic renewal.
  • Data practices. A scanner sees everything on your machine. Under a 2024 FTC order, Avast paid $16.5 million after its Jumpshot unit sold users’ browsing histories to more than 100 outside companies.

Set a calendar reminder six weeks before expiry. Don’t trust the renewal email to arrive in time.

How should you read our antivirus reviews and scores?

Protection carries 35% of each research score. It draws on published reports from three independent labs, AV-Test, AV-Comparatives and SE Labs, never on malware samples of our own.

Because every suite here got the same top badge, false positives and block rates do most of the sorting. Malwarebytes, for instance, logged 39 false alarms. In practice, that means legitimate software getting quarantined. Antivirus sits within our security and privacy section, alongside VPNs and identity theft protection.

How we score antivirus suites

Every product here is scored 0 to 10 on the same criteria, using published evidence. The overall score is the weighted average.

Questions people ask

Does antivirus slow down your computer?

Some suites do more than others. In AV-Comparatives' April 2026 performance test, McAfee had the lightest impact score of 20 products (3.3) and ESET the third-lightest (4.2). TotalAV is heavier, at 5.5 of 6 for performance from AV-Test. On older laptops, choose a light suite.

Why does antivirus cost more after the first year?

Vendors discount year one heavily, then renew at list price. Norton 360 Deluxe goes from $49.99 to $124.99, and McAfee+ Premium from $49.99 to $149.99. When you buy, note the renewal amount and switch off auto-renewal if you plan to shop around again.

Is free antivirus safe to use?

Free tools from vendors with strong lab results are safe, but each has limits. Bitdefender Antivirus Free covers one Windows PC without a firewall, and Malwarebytes Free only scans on demand. Avast Free tests well, yet Avast paid $16.5 million under a 2024 FTC order over selling browsing data.
