Hosting & Domains
Hosting & domains is the group of services that put a website and a business address online: the domain name, the server that stores your site, and email on your own name. Register the domain first; the right hosting then depends on what you build and how much of the server you want to run yourself.

What does Hosting & Domains cover?
Five kinds of service. Together they decide where your site lives, what it costs to keep running year after year, and who actually controls your name on the internet.
- Domain registrars sell and renew the name itself.
- Web hosting is low-cost shared space on a server, enough for most small sites.
- Managed WordPress hosting handles caching, security, staging and backups for WordPress.
- VPS and cloud hosting rents you a server of your own, root access and upkeep included.
- Email hosting puts proper mailboxes on your domain.
Which service do you need first?
The domain. Your website and your inbox both point at it, it renews every twelve months, and whoever holds the registrar login controls everything downstream, so pick a registrar with a flat renewal price and two-factor sign-in before anything else.
- If you run a business, set up email on that domain next. It is the hardest piece to move.
- If you have a small site, blog or portfolio, shared hosting is enough.
- If the site earns money, step up to managed WordPress, usually about $15 to $35 a month for one site.
- If you need root access or run apps besides WordPress, choose a VPS.
- If a website builder already runs your site, skip the separate host.
Most people do this in reverse. They take a host’s free domain and free mailbox, then find out after year one that both renew at whatever the host decides to charge.
What are the top picks in each category?
Each hub ranks its field on a research score out of 10, and these are the current leaders. Porkbun and DigitalOcean have full reviews published so far.
| Category | Top pick | Price from | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain registrars | Porkbun (9.3) | $11.08/yr for a .com, same at renewal | Anyone registering or moving a domain |
| Web hosting | Hostinger (8.2) | $2.99/mo on 48 months; renews at $10.99/mo | Beginners and small sites |
| Managed WordPress hosting | Pressable (8.9) | $250/yr for one site | Business sites, stores and agencies |
| VPS and cloud hosting | DigitalOcean (8.6) | $4/mo, no intro pricing | Developers and small technical teams |
| Email hosting | Google Workspace (8.7) | $7/user/mo on an annual plan | Teams that work in the browser |
Runners-up matter. Akamai Cloud matches DigitalOcean’s displayed 8.6 and answers the phone around the clock at no charge, while Zoho Mail, also at 8.6, is free for up to five users and the obvious value choice for a very small team.
When don’t you need any of this?
Skip the hosting bill when Wix, Squarespace or Shopify runs your site, because their plans already include servers; compare those under websites and e-commerce. Receiving mail only? Porkbun and Spaceship forward it free. And don’t rent a VPS for one WordPress site nobody will patch.
What should you watch for across all five?
Renewals, above all. When you compare offers, the second invoice tells you more than the first.
- Renewal jumps. Hostinger Premium goes from $2.99 to $10.99 a month, and GoDaddy’s .com renews at $22.99 plus the ICANN fee. Porkbun, DigitalOcean and Zoho Mail charge the same every term.
- Year-one freebies. A host’s free domain or mailbox usually lasts twelve months.
- Seat locks. Google and Microsoft annual plans let you add users mid-term but not remove them.
- The .com rise. Verisign lifts its wholesale fee from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026.
If you’ve already prepaid a long hosting term, note its renewal date now. In practice, that is the day to compare again.
How do we score Hosting & Domains providers?
Research, not lab work. We apply a published rubric to evidence anyone can check: official prices and terms, SLA documents, fee schedules such as ICANN’s registrar fees, independent data like Review Signal’s WordPress benchmarks, and mail rules such as Gmail’s sender guidelines. We don’t run uptime monitors or speed tests. Renewal cost weighs heavily everywhere. Commissions never change a score.
Questions people ask
Should I register my domain with my web host?
Usually not. A host's free domain covers year one, then renews at the host's rate. Porkbun charges $11.08 a year to register or renew a .com, fees included. Keep the name separate and switching hosts later means editing DNS records, not moving the domain.
What is the difference between shared and managed WordPress hosting?
Shared hosting puts many sites on one server for a few dollars a month. Managed WordPress hosting runs caching, security, staging and backups for you, usually about $15 to $35 a month for one site. Pick it once downtime or slow pages would cost you money.
Do I need a VPS?
Only for root access, software a shared host blocks, or resources you have outgrown. Most VPS plans are unmanaged, so patching falls to you. DigitalOcean starts at $4 a month. Want the power without the admin? Managed hosts such as Cloudways or Pressable take that work on.
What is the cheapest way to get email on my own domain?
Zoho Mail is free for up to five users, and Mail Lite costs $1 per user a month billed yearly. Google Workspace costs $7 per user on an annual plan but adds Docs, Drive, Meet and Gemini. Registrar forwarding costs nothing if you only receive mail.
Why does hosting cost more at renewal?
Shared hosts sell long first terms at a deep discount, then charge the standard rate. Hostinger Premium costs $2.99 a month for 48 months, then $10.99. DreamHost Launch is $2.89 for one year, then $10.99. Compare the total over the years you plan to stay.
