Security & Privacy
Security & privacy software is the group of tools that protect your accounts, devices, connection and personal data: password managers, VPNs, antivirus, identity theft protection and data removal. This page explains which one to set up first and what the evidence says about each category's top pick.

VPNProton VPNFive consecutive Securitum no-logs audits, open-source apps, 20,000+ servers in 149 countries, the best free plan and a fair $83.88 yearly renewal.
Password managersBitwardenOpen-source apps, yearly Cure53 audits, a free plan with unlimited devices and Premium at $19.80 a year with no renewal jump.
Which security & privacy tool should you set up first?
A password manager, plus two-factor authentication on your email and bank the same day. After that, one leaked password exposes one account instead of all of them. Bitwarden’s free plan covers unlimited devices, so cost isn’t an excuse.
What comes second depends on how you live online, which devices you carry, and whether a fraudster could open credit in your name with details already sitting in a breach database. Walk through it in order:
- Public Wi-Fi most weeks? Add a VPN. Our Proton VPN review explains why its free tier is the safe place to start.
- Windows PC, basic needs? Microsoft Defender is built in and free. Pay for a suite when you want Mac and phone cover, a lighter footprint, or extras like parental controls.
- US resident worried about new-account fraud? Freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion first; the FTC confirms it costs nothing. Identity monitoring comes after that.
- Address showing up on people-search sites? Add a data removal service, or file free requests yourself.
- Prefer one bill? Aura bundles identity monitoring with a VPN, antivirus, a password manager and broker removal.
What does each category cost, and which tool leads?
Top picks below follow the research scores on each hub. Prices are as listed in October 2026.
| Category | Top pick (score) | Price from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Password managers | Bitwarden (9.1) | Free; Premium $19.80 a year | Everyone, as step one |
| VPNs | Proton VPN (9.1) | Free; $3.49/mo on 2 years, then $83.88 a year | Public Wi-Fi users |
| Antivirus | Bitdefender (9.0) | Free; Total Security $59.99 in year one | Mixed Windows and Mac homes |
| Identity theft protection | Aura (8.9) | $144 a year | US households wanting three-bureau alerts |
| Data removal | Optery (8.8) | Free scan; Core $39 a year | US residents on people-search sites |
Bitdefender earned its spot with 99.5% in AV-Comparatives’ February to May 2026 Real-World test. Optery’s comes from the best paid result in Consumer Reports’ 2024 study: 68% of listings removed in four months.
When should you skip a paid tool?
More often than vendors suggest. In practice, the free options cover a surprising share of the job when you use them properly, and paying only makes sense for the gaps they leave. Apple Passwords and Google Password Manager are free. Defender is free. Californians can send one deletion request to every registered data broker through the state’s DROP service.
Skip identity theft protection entirely if you live outside the US; every service we rank needs a US Social Security number. And if you’ve just had a breach notice that included that number, don’t shop first. Freeze your credit that day.
When does the order change?
Already a victim? Start with the FTC’s free recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov, then call the fraud teams of any company where an account was opened. Moving abroad, or travelling a lot? A VPN climbs to second place.
How does Cybernock score security & privacy software?
Each product gets a research score out of 10 from criteria weighted for its category: audits and logging for VPNs, lab results for antivirus, removal evidence for data brokers. Scores rest on published evidence rather than in-house testing, and affiliate commissions don’t move them.
Questions people ask
Which security software should you get first?
A password manager, together with two-factor authentication on your email and bank. It stops one leaked password from opening every account. Bitwarden is our top pick, and its free plan covers unlimited devices. Add a VPN, antivirus, identity monitoring or data removal after that, depending on your risks.
Do you need both a VPN and antivirus?
They do different jobs. A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address; it won't stop you opening a malicious file. Antivirus blocks malware and scam sites; it doesn't hide your traffic. On Windows, the built-in Defender covers basics, so many people only add a VPN.
Is identity theft protection worth paying for?
Only after you freeze your credit, which is free and is what actually blocks new accounts in your name. A paid service adds three-bureau alerts, wider identity monitoring and a team that does the recovery work for you. Aura includes all three for $144 a year. Every service we rank is for US residents.
How does Cybernock score security software?
With a published rubric for each category, applied to evidence anyone can check: independent audits, AV-Test and AV-Comparatives results, Consumer Reports studies, pricing pages and policy terms. Each product ends with a research score out of 10. Affiliate commissions never change a score.
