Photo editing software

Photo editing software is an application that develops camera RAW files, corrects and retouches images and, in many cases, organises a photo library. Our photo editing reviews compare nine RAW and layered editors on image quality, what they really cost over time and how far their AI tools go before the credits run out, using prices listed in October 2026.

What kinds of photo editors are there?

Two, and many photographers use one of each. RAW editors such as Lightroom, Capture One and darktable turn the sensor data from your camera into finished photos and keep a library of thousands of images, and every edit is non-destructive, so the original file never changes. Layered editors such as Photoshop, Affinity and Photopea work on one image at a time. They are for retouching, composites and graphics.

Which photo editor fits you?

Don’t trust feature lists to decide this. Pick a payment model first. Each payment model, subscription, one-time licence or free open source, has a well-scored RAW editor in our ranking; the differences sit in libraries, AI limits and long-term cost.

  • If you shoot RAW and want one tool for everything: Lightroom. The $11.99-a-month plan includes Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, 1TB of storage, AI masks, Denoise and Assisted Culling on every device.
  • If you retouch or build composites: Photoshop, but buy it in Adobe’s $19.99 Photography plan with Lightroom. Skip the single-app plan; it includes only 25 generative credits.
  • If you refuse subscriptions: ON1 Photo RAW ($99.99 once in its October 2026 offer) for an all-in-one, or DxO PhotoLab 10 Elite ($249.99 once) for the cleanest high-ISO files.
  • If you shoot tethered in a studio: Capture One, about $18 a month for Pro on an annual plan (reported).
  • If you want quick AI edits: Luminar, renamed from Luminar Neo in August 2026 and the easiest editor we rank, at $99 once with one-click Sky AI and Enhance AI tools.
  • If you pay nothing: darktable for RAW, Affinity or Photopea for layers.
  • If you use a Chromebook or a locked-down work computer: Photopea, which runs in any browser and keeps files on your computer.
  • If you use Linux: darktable. It is the only RAW editor we rank with a native Linux version.

When should you not pay for a photo editor?

Skip the subscription if you edit a few photos a month. darktable is free and open source on Windows, Mac and Linux, and version 5.6, released in June 2026, added optional AI object masks and AI denoise. Affinity is free for individuals and imports PSD files. Photopea runs Photoshop-style layers in any browser, with ads. Don’t bother with a desktop RAW workflow if you mainly edit phone photos for social media; the free Lightroom mobile app covers that.

What catches photo editing buyers out?

  1. Cancellation fees. Cancelling an Adobe annual plan billed monthly after 14 days costs 50% of the remaining months. In March 2026 the US Justice Department announced a $150 million settlement with Adobe over how it disclosed early-termination fees.
  2. AI credits. Adobe’s single-app Photoshop plan includes only 25 generative credits a month. Luminar’s generative AI needs Luminar Prime after the first year.
  3. Upgrade costs. One-time licences aren’t free forever. DxO charges $129.99 to move from PhotoLab 8 or 9 to 10, and ON1 prices each yearly version as a paid upgrade. When you budget for ON1, count a paid upgrade for every yearly version you want.

Most people miss the slow price creep. Capture One raised prices 6% in March 2025 and again in mid-2026, and Creative Cloud Pro’s $34.99 offer lasts three months before it becomes $69.99. When you renew, check the current list price.

How we build our photo editing reviews

Our photo editing reviews are research scores. We read official pricing and licence terms, release notes, documented features and credit allowances, plus reputable independent reporting, and we don’t run our own image-quality tests. Vendor claims stay labelled as claims.

Editing and image quality carry 30% of the score, the largest share. Three pairs share a displayed score (8.1, 8.0 and 7.9) and are ordered by unrounded scores, so treat them as close calls and decide on price model and platform. Our AI criterion counts editing aids such as masks, denoise and object removal, not prompt-based image generation. In practice, darktable’s main penalty is its steep learning curve. Commissions never change a score; darktable, Affinity and Photopea pay review sites nothing. Related categories: graphic design, video editing and stock media.

Questions people ask

What is the best free photo editing software?

For RAW files, darktable: free, open source and available on Windows, Mac and Linux, with optional AI masks and denoise since version 5.6. For layered edits, Affinity is free for individuals on Mac and Windows, and Photopea works in any browser with ads. Lightroom's mobile app is free too. If you've never edited RAW before, expect a learning curve with darktable.

Is Lightroom or Photoshop better for photographers?

Lightroom, for most photographers, because it develops RAW files and organises a library, and its $11.99 plan also includes Lightroom Classic and 1TB of storage. Photoshop is the deeper tool for retouching and composites. If you need both, buy Adobe's $19.99 Photography plan, which bundles them and costs less than Photoshop on its own, and skip the single-app Photoshop plan with its 25 generative credits.

Can I buy photo editing software without a subscription?

Yes. DxO PhotoLab 10 Elite costs $249.99 once, ON1 Photo RAW $99.99 in its October 2026 offer and Luminar $99 for desktop, though each charges for later upgrades. darktable, Affinity and Photopea are free. Over five years, Lightroom costs $719.40, while DxO plus one $129.99 upgrade comes to $379.98. Capture One, a subscription, includes a perpetual licence after 5 years.

Which photo editor is best for high-ISO noise?

DxO PhotoLab, whose DeepPRIME XD denoising and lab-measured lens corrections earn it our best RAW image quality award. It costs $249.99 once for PhotoLab 10 Elite, which also adds Depth Masks. Lightroom's Denoise is the subscription alternative, and darktable 5.6 added an optional AI denoise module for free. Don't forget that DxO has no layers or mobile apps.

Does Adobe charge a fee to cancel Lightroom?

On the annual plan billed monthly, yes. Cancelling after 14 days costs 50% of the remaining months, a fee the government alleged Adobe hid in fine print. In March 2026 the US Justice Department announced a $150 million settlement with Adobe over how it disclosed early-termination fees and handled cancellations. When you sign up, check the plan type.
