Wix is a hosted drag-and-drop website builder from Wix.com Ltd. with an AI editor, built-in store and booking tools, and editable SEO settings such as robots.txt and bulk redirects. Paid plans run from $17 to $159 a month on annual billing, and sites can't be exported.

Our verdict

Ranked first: the most built in and the fastest real-world sites, at the cost of lock-in

Wix does the most out of the box. You get an AI editor you can still adjust by hand, payments from the Core plan, editable robots.txt and bulk redirects. HTTP Archive data also gives it the best Core Web Vitals pass rate of the big builders. Those findings put it first. The cost is lock-in: neither a Wix site nor its blog can be exported. Pick Squarespace for portfolio-first design, Webflow for code export and a serious CMS, or WordPress.com if you want to own and move your content.

Good fit for

  • Small businesses that want a site, store and bookings in one place
  • Owners who want AI to draft the site but still edit by hand
  • Local service businesses that care about mobile speed
  • Freelancers building simple client sites on Wix Studio

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Anyone who may move hosts later: choose WordPress.com
  • Designers who want code export and a deep CMS: choose Webflow
  • Stores with hundreds of products: see our best ecommerce platforms list

Wix is a hosted, drag-and-drop website builder from Wix.com Ltd., a Nasdaq-listed company based in Israel. You design in a browser editor and the company hosts the result. Paid plans add a custom domain, more storage, payments and business apps such as bookings and events. W3Techs counted Wix on 4.2% of all websites in October 2026, more than any other hosted builder except Shopify.

On the Cybernock research rubric Wix scores 8.3/10 and ranks first in our best website builders list. It leads on the two criteria we weight most, design and SEO features. Its real-world speed record is also the best of the big builders. The weak spot is lock-in. A site built here can’t leave.

How does Wix work in 2026?

Wix now has three editors. Wix Harmony, launched on January 21, 2026, is the new default for self-builders: you describe the site you want, the AI agent Aria builds it, and you keep editing by prompt or by drag and drop. The classic Wix Editor still works and can still create new sites. Wix Studio targets designers and agencies, with custom CSS, advanced layout tools and Velo code.

Harmony is still rolling out, in English first. The company’s own help article lists what it can’t do yet: custom code, the CMS, Wix Multilingual and a few apps are missing inside Harmony. If you need a database-driven site or several languages today, build in the classic Editor or Studio. In practice, Harmony suits a simple first site best.

All three editors share one app market and the same business tools: Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, a blog, forms, email marketing and member areas. The plans page lists more than 1,000 templates.

How good is Wix for SEO and blogging?

Very good, and better than its old reputation. You can edit robots.txt, set robots meta tags per page or per page type, and manage 301 redirects in a URL Redirect Manager that imports up to 500 URLs at once. When you change a URL, Wix creates the redirect for you and updates the sitemap and canonical tag. Moving from another platform? Don’t skip the bulk import, or old links will break.

  • Structured data: markup is added automatically to product, event and blog pages, and you can add your own JSON-LD.
  • Meta tags: titles, descriptions and Open Graph tags are editable, plus up to 10 custom meta tags per page.
  • Search Console data: the SEO dashboard pulls in Google Search Console figures.
  • Dynamic pages: CMS-driven pages get their own SEO settings, so every item page can carry a unique title and description.

The gap is portability, covered below. For a blog you may want to move one day, WordPress.com is the safer home.

Are Wix sites fast?

Yes, by the best public measure available. The HTTP Archive Core Web Vitals Technology Report draws on Chrome UX Report data from real visitors. In August 2026, 81% of the 189,924 Wix sites it tracked passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile, and 87% on desktop. A year earlier the mobile figure was 76%.

Rivals trail in the same report: Squarespace at 72% on mobile, Webflow and Framer at 71%, Hostinger Website Builder at 55%. These are field results for the sites people actually build. When you pile large images or heavy apps onto a page, it can still crawl. What the data does show is that the platform itself is no longer the bottleneck.

How much does Wix cost?

There’s a free plan and four paid site plans. Light costs $17 a month billed yearly, Core $29, Business $39 and Business Elite $159, according to Style Factory’s August 2026 price check. Month-to-month billing costs $24, $36, $46 and $172. The official plans page shows prices by location; from ours it showed tax-inclusive regional prices, so this review uses the US figures above.

PlanBilled yearlyBilled monthlyStorageCan take payments?
Free$0$0500 MBNo
Light$17/mo$24/mo2 GBNo
Core$29/mo$36/mo50 GBYes, basic store
Business$39/mo$46/mo100 GBYes, plus automatic sales tax
Business Elite$159/mo$172/moUnlimitedYes, advanced store tools

Buy Light for a brochure or portfolio site. Switch to Core the moment you need to take a payment, sell a product or accept a paid booking. Wix Payments charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per US card payment and adds no transaction fee of its own. Skip the monthly option unless you’re testing: it adds $7 to $13 a month to every plan.

Yearly and multi-year plans include a voucher for a free domain for one year, which you must redeem within 60 days. Set a reminder when you buy, because an unclaimed voucher lapses. A first Premium upgrade is refundable if you cancel within 14 days.

The free plan has no time limit, but it shows ads, uses a wixsite.com address and can’t sell anything. Treat it as a sandbox for building and testing before you pay.

Where does Wix fall short?

  • You can’t take the site with you. The help center says a site can’t be exported or hosted elsewhere, and blog posts can’t be exported to other platforms. Products export as a CSV and domains can be transferred, but the design and pages must be rebuilt.
  • The cheapest plan can’t sell. Light removes ads and connects a domain, but payments start at Core.
  • Harmony is unfinished. The new AI editor lacks the CMS, multilingual sites and custom code for now.
  • Three editors can confuse. Wix doesn’t describe a way to convert an existing Editor site to Harmony, so choose your editor before you start.

Squarespace has the more polished templates and suits portfolios and creative businesses. It raised prices by up to 26% in July 2026, though, and its sites score lower on Core Web Vitals. Webflow gives designers far more control and exports static code, with a steeper learning curve. WordPress.com wins when owning and moving your content matters most.

Who should not build on Wix?

Three groups should look elsewhere.

  • Anyone who may change platforms. If you’ve ever had to migrate a site, you know what a rebuild costs. WordPress.com moves the full site with a migration plugin; Wix exports little beyond product CSVs.
  • Designers who need code export or a deep CMS. Webflow hands over static code on paid Workspace plans.
  • Stores with hundreds of products. A dedicated commerce platform is the better base; start with our best ecommerce platforms list.

Should you buy Wix?

For most small businesses, yes. The evidence favours it on breadth: an AI editor you can still control by hand, a store, bookings, a blog, solid SEO controls and fast sites, all on one platform. Start on the free plan. Then buy Core yearly if you’ll take payments, or Light if you won’t.

Flip the answer if portability matters: choose WordPress.com. Agencies building custom sites should weigh Webflow or Framer. Browse every option in our website builder reviews.

Wix FAQ

Is Wix good for small businesses?

For most, yes. Wix ranks first on our research score because one Core plan, $29 a month on annual billing, covers a site, an online store, bookings and a blog. Its sites also passed Core Web Vitals more often than Squarespace or Webflow sites in August 2026. The trade-off: you can't export the site later.

How much does Wix cost per month?

Light costs $17 a month, Core $29, Business $39 and Business Elite $159, all billed yearly, as listed by Style Factory in August 2026. Monthly billing costs $24, $36, $46 and $172. You need Core or higher to accept payments.

Does Wix have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan has no time limit and includes the editor, hosting and templates, but it shows Wix ads, uses a wixsite.com address, caps storage at 500 MB and can't take payments. Upgrade to Light to connect your own domain.

Can I move my Wix site to another host?

No. Wix's help center says Wix sites run only on Wix servers and can't be exported. Blog posts can't be exported to other platforms either. You can export products as a CSV and transfer your domain, but the pages must be rebuilt elsewhere.

Wix vs Squarespace: which is better?

Wix is better for most small businesses: more apps, stronger SEO controls and faster sites in Chrome field data. Squarespace is better for portfolios and creative brands that want polished templates and less to configure. Both lock you in, so neither is ideal if you may switch platforms.

Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes. Wix lets you edit robots.txt, manage 301 redirects with bulk import of up to 500 URLs, add custom JSON-LD structured data and set robots meta tags per page. Its old reputation for weak SEO no longer matches the toolset it offers in 2026.
