Semrush review: the most complete SEO suite, if you can carry the seat costs

Semrush is an all-in-one SEO and AI-visibility platform, owned by Adobe since April 2026. The evidence favours it for in-house marketing teams and agencies that want keyword, backlink, audit and AI-answer data under one subscription.

Our verdict

The best all-in-one SEO tool for most teams

Semrush covers more of the SEO job than any rival we rank, and it bundles AI prompt tracking for ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode into every plan from Starter at $199 a month. Its vendor-claimed database of more than 28 billion keywords and 43 trillion backlinks is among the largest. That breadth earns first place. The catch is cost: the price climbs quickly once you add users and toolkits, and monthly plans carry no refund. Choose SE Ranking for more tracked keywords per dollar, Ahrefs for backlink-led work, or Mangools if you run one or two small sites.

Good fit for

  • In-house marketing teams that want keyword, backlink, audit and AI-visibility data in one tool
  • Agencies managing 5 to 40 client sites that can pass seat costs on
  • Brands that need to track how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention them
  • Marketers who also run paid search and want PPC keyword data alongside SEO

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Freelancers tracking thousands of keywords on a tight budget: choose SE Ranking
  • Bloggers with one or two sites: Mangools or Moz Pro Starter cost far less
  • Teams focused only on content briefs and on-page scores: choose Surfer

Semrush is a subscription SEO and online visibility platform from Semrush Holdings, which has been part of Adobe since April 28, 2026. One login gets you keyword research, backlink analysis, rank tracking, site audits and content tools. Most plans also record how your brand shows up in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. Paid tiers run from $139 to $549 a month on monthly billing, and a free plan allows 10 reports a day.

On the Cybernock research rubric Semrush scores 8.7/10 and sits first in our best SEO tools list. Two findings drive that: no rival covers as much of the SEO workflow, and none bundles as much AI-search monitoring into standard plans. The weak spot is cost. A plan includes one user, each extra seat starts at $45 a month, and the tier most growing teams end up on costs $299.

What changed at Semrush in 2026?

The owner and the plan line-up both changed. Adobe announced on November 19, 2025 that it would buy Semrush for $12 a share, about $1.9 billion in cash, and closed the deal on April 28, 2026. Semrush now calls itself an Adobe company, and its data feeds Adobe’s enterprise marketing products. Self-serve customers haven’t lost any tools so far. Still, expect the roadmap to tilt toward large brands.

Then, in July 2026, the tiers were rebuilt. The pricing tracker PricingSaaS logged the details: Pro became SEO at an unchanged price, Guru gave way to Pro+ (annual rate up from $208.33 to $248.17 a month), Business turned into Advanced (up from $416.66 to $455.67), and two new options appeared, Starter and Free. When you read an older review quoting Pro, Guru or Business prices, treat those numbers as stale.

Which Semrush features matter most?

Five toolsets do most of the work on every paid tier:

  • Keyword research: Keyword Magic Tool and Keyword Overview, drawing on what the company says is more than 28 billion keywords across 142 country databases (vendor claim).
  • Backlink analysis: Backlink Analytics and Backlink Gap, built on an index Semrush puts above 43 trillion links (vendor claim).
  • Rank tracking: daily Position Tracking for 500 keywords on SEO and Starter, 1,500 on Pro+ and 5,000 on Advanced.
  • Site Audit: crawls for technical and on-page errors, within limits set by your tier.
  • Competitor research: domain overviews, organic and paid keyword gaps, and traffic estimates.

Row limits are the detail most people miss. A ContextBolt breakdown of the 2026 tiers lists 10,000 rows per report on SEO and Starter, 30,000 on Pro+ and 50,000 on Advanced. Broad topics and big competitors blow past 10,000 rows quickly, so in practice the cheap tiers show you a slice, not the whole market. Historical data (past rankings for any domain) begins at Pro+. API access arrives only with Advanced.

How good is Semrush’s AI search tracking?

Among the all-in-one suites we rank, it’s the most complete, and three of the four paid tiers include it at no extra charge. Starter monitors 50 custom prompts a day, Pro+ 100 and Advanced 200. The entry SEO tier has no prompt quota at all, according to the company’s subscriptions guide.

Coverage differs by report. The Prompt Tracking docs name ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Brand Performance goes wider: it generates prompts for your market and follows answers across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Rivals charge separately. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI as an add-on from $199 a month, while SE Ranking asks $89 a month for its AI Search add-on.

How much does Semrush cost?

Semrush costs $139 a month for the SEO plan on monthly billing, or $117.33 a month paid yearly. The figures below are US list prices taken from the official pricing page in October 2026. There’s no introductory discount, so renewal matches list.

Add-ons are where budgets slip once you grow. Every tier includes one user, and when you add colleagues the bill moves fast: extra seats start at $45, and third-party breakdowns list $45 on SEO and Starter, $80 on Pro+ and $100 on Advanced. Client report templates run $10 or $20 apiece monthly. The Agency Partners Platform is $90. Local, Content, Traffic & Market and other toolkits are billed separately, with Traffic & Market users starting at $289 a month, per the subscriptions guide.

Which tier, then? Pick SEO when you need classic search data for up to five sites and nothing else. Pay the extra $60 for Starter only when you want prompt monitoring, because it adds no SEO capacity. Agencies juggling more than five client domains need Pro+. Before paying monthly, use the 7-day trial (exports are switched off). Don’t count on a refund: the refund policy offers 7-day money back only on a first purchase with a 12-month or longer commitment paid by card. Monthly subscriptions and renewals are excluded.

Where does Semrush fall short?

  • Team costs climb fast: one seat per plan, with extra users at $45 to $100 a month each.
  • Local SEO, content and traffic data sit in separate toolkits with their own fees.
  • Refunds exclude monthly plans; the 7-day guarantee covers annual first purchases only.
  • Historical data starts at $299 a month, and the API needs the $549 Advanced tier.
  • Adobe ownership makes future packaging harder to predict for small customers.

Who should not buy Semrush?

Skip the subscription if you run one or two small sites. Paying $139 or more each month for a suite you’ll open twice a week rarely makes sense; Mangools or Moz Pro cover the basics for far less. Freelancers who track thousands of client keywords on a thin margin get more rows per dollar from SE Ranking. And if your job is writing, not research, Surfer’s on-page scoring is the cheaper fit. If you’ve already paid for Ahrefs and mostly build links, adding Semrush duplicates what you have.

How does Semrush compare with Ahrefs and SE Ranking?

Each rival wins somewhere. Ahrefs is stronger for link-led work and reports a larger backlink history in its own figures, but it charges more for AI monitoring and almost never refunds. SE Ranking gives you four times the tracked keywords and twice the projects for less money, which is why it’s our value pick for agencies. Moz Pro is the cheapest way in, from $49 a month.

Should you buy Semrush?

For most marketing teams, yes. The evidence points one way: Semrush combines keyword research, backlinks, audits, rank tracking and AI-search visibility in a single subscription, with the deepest data on our list outside Ahrefs’ link index. Start on the free plan or the trial. Then choose SEO for classic work, or Starter once prompt monitoring matters.

The answer flips in three cases. Tracking lots of client keywords on a budget? SE Ranking is better value. Is link building your main job? Go with Ahrefs. Writing content and needing only on-page guidance? Surfer costs far less. The full SEO tools ranking and all SEO tool reviews carry the side-by-side detail.

Semrush FAQ

Is Semrush worth it in 2026?

Yes, for teams that use several SEO tools at once. From $139 a month you get keyword research, backlinks, audits and daily rank tracking for five sites, and Starter adds AI prompt tracking. If you own a single small site, don't bother: Mangools or Moz Pro give better value.

Does Semrush have a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan costs $0, needs no credit card and gives one demo project and 10 reports a day with limited AI Visibility features. Paid plans also come with a 7-day free trial, during which exports are switched off.

How much does Semrush cost?

Semrush costs $139 a month for SEO, $199 for Starter, $299 for Pro+ and $549 for Advanced on monthly billing, or $117.33 to $455.67 a month billed annually, as listed in October 2026. Each plan includes one user, and extra seats cost more.

Who owns Semrush now?

Adobe. It announced the purchase in November 2025 for $12 a share, about $1.9 billion in cash, and completed it on April 28, 2026. Semrush now describes itself as an Adobe company, and its data feeds Adobe's enterprise marketing products.

Semrush vs Ahrefs: which is better?

Semrush is better for broad marketing teams and AI-search tracking, which it bundles from $199 a month. Ahrefs is better for backlink research, with a 35-trillion-record backlink history in its own figures, but its AI tracking is a $199-a-month add-on and it rarely refunds.

Can I get a refund from Semrush?

Only in limited cases. Semrush refunds within 7 days a first purchase with a 12-month or longer commitment paid by card on semrush.com. Monthly subscriptions and renewals are excluded, so when you pay month to month, use the free trial first.
