Our verdict

Ranked first: a .com price that doesn't jump at renewal

The evidence favours Porkbun on the cost that lasts. Its .com renews at the same $11.08 you pay on day one, privacy and SSL are free, and logins accept security keys and passkeys. That combination puts it first in our ranking. Cloudflare Registrar is a little cheaper but ties you to Cloudflare's DNS. Spaceship has the lowest .com renewal, Dynadot suits domain investors who need registry lock, and GoDaddy answers the phone at any hour.

Good fit for

  • Small businesses and bloggers who want the same price every year
  • Developers who want API access and free DNS without lock-in
  • Owners leaving a registrar that renews a .com at $18 or more
  • Anyone who wants hardware-key or passkey protection on the account

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Sites already on Cloudflare: Cloudflare Registrar is a little cheaper
  • Domain investors who need auctions and registry lock: choose Dynadot
  • Owners who need phone help at night: choose GoDaddy

Porkbun is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar based in Tigard, Oregon. It belongs to Top Level Design, the company that ran new top-level domains such as .design and .wiki before selling them. Its listed prices already include ICANN and registry fees. WHOIS privacy, SSL certificates, email forwarding and URL forwarding cost nothing extra, where many rivals bill for them.

On our research rubric Porkbun scores 9.3/10 and ranks first in our best domain registrars list. Three pieces of evidence put it there. The renewal price matches the sign-up price. Account login supports hardware security keys and passkeys. And checkout doesn’t push add-ons you never asked for.

How much does Porkbun really cost?

A .com at Porkbun costs $11.08 a year to register, $11.08 to renew and $11.08 to transfer in. Porkbun’s pricing page says all prices include ICANN and any other fees, so the checkout total matches the listed figure.

That flat price explains the top rank. Plenty of registrars advertise a cheap first year, then renew a .com at $18 to $23. That jump only shows up on the second invoice, so check the renewal column before you buy anywhere. Porkbun’s other popular extensions print the renewal right beside any first-year discount:

ExtensionFirst yearRenewalTransfer
.com$11.08$11.08$11.08
.net$12.52$12.52$12.52
.org$7.98$11.84$11.84
.io$28.12$51.80$51.80
.dev$8.75$12.87$12.87

Watch the .io line. A $28.12 first year becomes $51.80 at renewal, so budget for the second number, not the first.

Prices come from Porkbun’s domain pricing page in October 2026. One date matters. Verisign, which runs the .com registry, raises its wholesale fee from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026; its CEO confirmed the change on the company’s April 2026 earnings call. Expect every registrar’s .com price to climb by roughly that gap, Porkbun included. If you’ve already decided to stay, renew for several years before November 1, because the current price holds for every year you prepay.

What do you get free with a Porkbun domain?

Every Porkbun domain includes the extras a small site needs, at no charge:

  • WHOIS privacy, which keeps your name, address and phone number out of public lookups.
  • SSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt, renewed automatically when you use Porkbun’s DNS or hosting.
  • DNS management running on Cloudflare’s network.
  • Email forwarding, so mail to you@yourdomain.com lands in an inbox you already check.
  • URL forwarding for pointing a spare domain at your main site.
  • API access for developers who manage domains with scripts.

Porkbun also sells email hosting, website hosting and a domain marketplace. None is required, and none is pushed at checkout. Skip the bundled hosting if your site needs more than the basics; specialist hosts offer far more.

How secure is a Porkbun account?

Very secure, for a consumer registrar. Porkbun supports app-based two-factor authentication and physical security keys through WebAuthn. Its help center also documents passwordless login with passkeys such as Touch ID, Windows Hello or a YubiKey.

Why does login strength matter for a domain? Whoever controls it can redirect your website and read your email. Hardware keys block the phishing attacks that defeat text-message codes. So when you set up the account, add a security key or passkey before anything else.

DNSSEC is supported too. It signs your DNS records so nobody can quietly forge them. On Porkbun’s own nameservers you switch it on through the Cloudflare DNSSEC setting. With DNS hosted elsewhere, you add the DS record in the domain’s registry DNSSEC panel.

Porkbun does not document a registry lock, the extra layer that makes the registry itself refuse changes until a human confirms them. Most small businesses can live without one. A high-value or high-risk domain is different: Dynadot sells registry lock for .com and .net, and Cloudflare offers it to Enterprise customers.

What is Porkbun’s support like?

Email support runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Phone and live chat run from 9am to 5pm Pacific Time, seven days a week, holidays included. That beats Cloudflare, where free-plan registrar customers get no phone or chat support. Namecheap and Spaceship have no phone line at all. GoDaddy remains the pick if you want to call outside US office hours.

In practice, those hours suit the Americas. A 5pm Pacific close is past midnight in Central Europe, so European and most Asian business-day questions go through email.

Porkbun points to its Trustpilot rating and to “#1 registrar” mentions by USA Today and Forbes Advisor. Those are the company’s own marketing claims. Our score rests on published prices, documented security features and stated support hours instead.

Where does Porkbun fall short?

  • No registry lock option is documented, which matters for high-value domains.
  • Phone and chat support stop at 5pm Pacific, so European and Asian business hours rely on email.
  • Its .com price will rise after November 1, 2026, like everyone else’s.
  • Its hosting and email products are basic next to specialist providers.

Cloudflare is slightly cheaper because it sells at cost, but it locks you into Cloudflare’s nameservers. Spaceship renews a .com for about 90 cents less, with fewer verified security features and no phone support. Namecheap’s first year can undercut Porkbun with a coupon. Its .com renewal, though, runs about $7.60 a year higher, so the coupon’s saving is gone by year two.

Cloudflare’s price comes from a third-party tracker of its at-cost prices. Namecheap and Spaceship figures come from third-party trackers dated October 11, 2026.

Who should not register with Porkbun?

Four kinds of owner get a better deal elsewhere.

  • Sites already on Cloudflare. Cloudflare Registrar renews a .com at $10.46, about 60 cents under Porkbun, and you already use its nameservers.
  • Domain investors. Dynadot has the better marketplace for buying and selling, plus a registry lock.
  • Owners of one very valuable name. Without a documented registry lock, Porkbun can’t add the registry-side protection a bank or large brand should want.
  • Anyone who needs a phone call at night. GoDaddy picks up around the clock; Porkbun’s phones close at 5pm Pacific.

Should you register your domain with Porkbun?

For most people, yes. The evidence points one way: a renewal price that matches day one, free privacy and SSL, and phishing-resistant login, all without committing to Cloudflare’s DNS. Buy the domain on its own rather than bundled with hosting. To lock today’s price, renew for several years before November 1, 2026.

Moving an existing name is worth it only when your current renewal is high. If your registrar charges $18 or more to renew a .com, a transfer to Porkbun costs $11.08, less than that next bill. Don’t bother moving for the lowest possible renewal alone; Spaceship is about 90 cents cheaper. Cloudflare users should look at Cloudflare Registrar, and investors at Dynadot. Porkbun FAQ

Is Porkbun legit and safe?

Yes. Porkbun is an ICANN-accredited registrar owned by Top Level Design, a US company that ran domain registries for years. It offers app-based 2FA, hardware security keys, passkey login and DNSSEC. That is stronger account protection than most low-cost registrars document.

Is Porkbun cheaper than Namecheap?

Over time, yes. Porkbun charges $11.08 to register and renew a .com, fees included. Namecheap's first year can be lower with a coupon, but third-party trackers listed its .com renewal at $18.48 plus a $0.20 ICANN fee in October 2026.

Does Porkbun charge for WHOIS privacy?

No. WHOIS privacy is free on every Porkbun domain, along with Let's Encrypt SSL certificates, DNS, email forwarding and URL forwarding. Most large rivals now include privacy free too, so the real difference is Porkbun's low renewal price.

Will Porkbun's .com price go up?

Very likely. Verisign raises the wholesale .com fee from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026, and registrars pass that on. Renewing for several years before that date locks in the current $11.08 price for the years you prepay.

Porkbun vs Cloudflare Registrar: which is better?

Porkbun suits most people because you can use any DNS provider and reach a human by phone. Cloudflare is about 60 cents a year cheaper on .com because it sells at cost, but every domain must use Cloudflare's nameservers and free-plan users get no phone or chat help.
